February is a month that will encourage us to accept people as they are. (Yes, even the ones who make you nuts – the ones you just don’t understand.) Sounds like fun, right? Umm…

What Lars and the Real Girl Can Teach Us

Recently, my husband and I fell upon a movie on Netflix that really blew us away. If you haven’t seen Lars and the Real Girl, do yourself a favor and grab some popcorn. It’s an amaaaaazing story about Lars, a sweet and yet socially awkward guy, who falls in love with - wait for it - a life-sized doll named Bianca.

OK, people… get your minds out of the gutter! I know! Sounds bizarre, right?

But here’s the kicker. Instead of staging an intervention, his family and community rolls with it. They treat Lars's new friend Bianca like she’s real. They choose not to mock Lars but to support him where he’s at. And guess what? That love and acceptance helps Lars to heal in ways no one could imagine or expect.

Recently, it’s become more evident to me that sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is meet people where they are at in their version of their personal reality, even if that reality includes a life-sized doll named Bianca.

February’s Mission... Should You Choose to Accept It

This month, the universe asks us to meet people exactly where they’re at without trying to “fix or change” them. Try resisting the temptation to ask them to conform to your agenda.

Here’s how you can lean into February’s energy:

Drop the Judgment: Everyone’s got their own “Bianca.” Maybe it’s a quirky habit, a dream that seems a little out there, or a weird obsession with something bizarre. Let them have it.
Ask yourself why it’s so important to you that they conform to your way of thinking. Are you afraid of being embarrassed? Are you afraid you can’t help them because you don’t understand them?
Be Curious: Instead of thinking, “What the... ?” try saying, “Tell me more.” You might be surprised at how much you’ll learn about someone when you approach them with genuine curiosity.
Laugh a Little: Acceptance doesn’t have to be heavy. Sometimes, the best way to connect with others is to laugh with them … not at them. There’s a big difference here.
